Sugar and Suffering Series

The Sugar and Suffering series brings to light the historical persistence of human slavery and vitality in human perseverance through a visual narrative of modern day sugarcane plantations in Haiti.  The Art of the Batey* exhibition was accompanied by a series of talks and film screenings that juxtaposed sugar’s sweetness against the political and social implications for those enslaved by the economy of this seductive global commodity.
*Batey is a modern day slave plantation where Haitian sugar workers are imprisoned
